As we drove in to school, Davin told me the following story: he awoke briefly at 8am or so, to the sound of rushing water. Now, since he got his new 75-gallon fishtank filled earlier in the week, he has been particularly alert for the sound of rushing water, because it could signify the tank leaking. However, this time it seemed to be coming from the direction of the bathroom and not the living room, so he figured it was probably just the downstairs neighbors taking a shower. So he went back to sleep.
As he said later, "Bad plan".
He woke up again with the alarm at 9am, still hearing the rushing water. All was secure in the bathroom he and Elyse use, but in the other bathroom there was a lot of water overflowing from the toilet tank! It was rushing out from behind the handle, and as he walked over to it to get a closer look, his feet left squishy compressed footprints behind him in the bathmat, and when he glanced back at them he saw them filling up with water.
The float had somehow sprung a leak, so the float arm was staying down at the bottom of the tank, so the water valve just didn't close, and the tank had just kept on filling up until it started overflowing. Just as he had pulled up on the float arm to stop the water, there was a knock at the door.
It was the repair guy. Apparently the neighbors downstairs had woken up a short time earler and called him. The water had been leaking through the floor into their bathroom, and since it had been stained yellow by passing through something in between, they had thought their apartment was being drenched in urine!
Ew. Anyway, that's the story.
