Christmas NYC 2003 [2]

Here are my 60's liberal Vietnam-era parents, and me in my flying ensemble.

I borrowed a car and drove out to Long Island, and on the way I stopped in beautiful downtown Millwood.

What I did with my day:

  1. Drove way out on Long Island and saw Janet at her friend's house. Talked to Janet. Talked to the friend. Talked to the friend's kid(s). Talked to Cosmo the stuffed dog, who lives with the older kid.
  2. Drove Janet from the friend's house to her sister Julia's house. Saw Julia's kids for about five minutes, before they were packed off to Hebrew school. Hung around with Janet and Julia for about an hour. Drove over to Hebrew school with them to pick up the kids.
Picking up the kids at Hebrew school was an amazingly highly-engineered operation. The cars have to arrive precisely on time, and have to be all lined up in order before the time when the kids are let out the door. There are penalties to the parents for being even a minute late. Then, the kids are let out of the door and find their vehicles. Only once all the kids have boarded their vehicles, and are belted in, can any cars leave the parking lot.

And all this, for a Hebrew School that is right across the street from the gate of their gated community. The standards for parental protectiveness are different in different families, but I kind of think my parents would have sent me out to walk it. They might have strapped some kind of reflector on me, but that would be it.

Got to talk to the kids for about five more minutes, and then headed off to New York. My only documentation for this is this one photo, where Rachel and I did dueling photographs.

But I do have some documentation for my subsequent travels L.I.E. to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, to meet up with parents and brother, and brother's girlfriend, for a dinner at this German restaurant. How was the restaurant selected? They kept going past it and saying to one another, "Gee, we should try that place out some time."

I thought these photos were cool, mostly because of the reflecting lights. I don't know what's up with 2707, but I don't care enough to bother digging up the original in order to reorient it and regenerate thumbnails. Maybe later.

And some street-level New York. I think the first one is right at the exit from the tunnel. Again, I like the colors, but as usual it's hard to get a sharp photo out of the Canon after sunset.
