The Terrible Secret of System Administration
(Who is this?)

Dan's Excellent Web Page

I was standing in the back yard of our house in Cleveland at the age of two. My Grandmother Louise was standing in the yard too, and I was holding a handful of sand.

I looked at the sand and said "Yum yum!" and motioned as if to put it in my mouth. Grandmother Louise looked at me and said "No, no!" and shook her head. I looked back and nodded "yes, yes!" and put the sand in my mouth.

Then I chewed. It was really crunchy, but it didn't have much taste to it and I didn't want to swallow it. This explains why sand isn't one of my favorite foods today.

The Fish Story - the story that started it all.

The Legend Of The Ferret
Once when the world was younger, the great Trickster Mouse came down from the sky. He found Ferret, sitting by the side of the river. Ferret had caught a fish, and he was about to eat it. In those days, Ferret was big and round, did you know that?

March 2004 trip to Disney World, Florida
  [New!]
My latest trip to the Happiest Place On Earth(tm). This is not the first time I've taken the Canon there -- one of the 2002 vacations had a trip to Pleasure Island -- but this was my first digital photo excursion inside the main theme parks.

Christmas in New York, 2003
  [New!]
A trip home for Christmas.

Winter in Buffalo. There's really not much of a story there besides the picture itself. I found this car buried under the snow in this shopping center and knew instantly it must be photographed. I swung by home to grab my camera, and when I came back I just happened to capture this one with the plow going by, ignoring the poor buried car.

Thanksgiving 2003 in Tampa

All about my trip to Tampa for Thanksgiving in 2003. Shaene will be pleased to see that she made the home page. Her wall of shame is below in the next story. There's also a small sidebar involving Tigger.

Shaene's Birthday

This was October 2002. A month or two after the previous trip to Tampa, which is listed somewhere below. And I think this story is unfinished, because I found a couple dozen more photos of that trip after the last one I put in the page.

Choir Story I called the director "Coach".

A Year of Mail

I produced a time-series plot with a tick for every single mail message I received in my INBOX (minus spam filtering). Interesting results. This plot summarizes the arrival of about 26,000 mail messages.

What I Learned At My High School Reunion
Did you ever secretly hope that the bully who picked on you in high school turned out to be an unemployed loser? Did you ever secretly hope that the prom queen ended up pregnant and barefoot? And weren't you ashamed of yourself for wishing such things? Me too.

TAI/UTC Agreement: Abandonment of the Leap Second
My proposal for how to ease the inconvenience of maintaining agreement between civil time (UTC) and the more-accurate time standard maintained by atomic clocks (TAI).

Running Follow Spots for a couple concerts in college. Perhaps there will be more stories about Kevin Hines in the future.

I Think Marble Cat Got Out!
Janet was worried. It was Christmas, and it looked like Marble Cat had escaped!

Cleaning the Stadium with OAC

The UB Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) has a responsibility that is unique among student organizations. We clean the stadium after the home games.

My Trip to Tampa (1).

Craig was going to have another birthday, as he usually does around this time of year, and Janet thought it would be cool if I could show up and surprise him.

Max Rebo sets out on his vacation.

I'm tired of Buffalo. I need a break. Hmm. I should go to Tampa on vacation. ...But how can I get to Florida?
[BIG]
Lunch at Mississippi Mudds.
The folks from work went out for a little team-building event.

A sad photo.

Max Rebo, caught in the act.

About my new haircut
When I was a little kid, I didn't care what my hair looked like.
When I was in elementary school, my dad cut my hair himself, so we could save money. I'd sit on the stool in front of the mirror and he'd use this set of clippers to trim it. Except my dad has no idea of how to cut hair, and I would always end up with something that looked like he'd put a bowl over my head and trimmed around the edges.

New Digital Camera Page
This weekend I bought a digital camera. Then I spent the rest of the weekend fighting with my computers. Finally I won.

NEVER TYPE THIS
If the title isn't enough to make you read this story then I doubt this dumb little blurb will help either.

Romance?
Nobody knows what it is, me included. But I wrote this anyway.

This is Marble Cat.

The Joys And Tribulations of Marble Cat. Marble Cat was one of the seven kittens that Mommy Cat had when we moved her into the second bathroom at our apartment. This was in August 1998. She was mostly brown, and had marbled fur across her face which is why Janet named her Marble Cat.

Moving! (Tampa to Buffalo)
I used to live in Tampa, Florida. Then I decided to move to Buffalo.

My Uncle's Airline Stories He started out in the airline business driving a fuel truck and refueling airplanes; then he got a job with Northeast Airlines on Nantucket, running the entire airline station himself. After that, when Northeast got bought out, he worked a whole series of ramp and gate jobs at BWI (Baltimore-Washington International Airport).

Davin and Bubblewrap
Davin likes to play with bubblewrap. He got a sheet of it wrapped around a hard drive that he bought, and he used to keep it on top of the little bookcase in the kitchen. He would stand around talking with us and snapping the little bubbles.
