Some csgeeks history

I figured that I'd try to piece together some dates for when major csgeeks events occurred. If you notice anything wrong, or remember something important that I forgot, please send me mail.

The main story
The core group of people that became csgeeks started hanging out together in Fall 1988. Apparently this was precipitated by most of the people involved being associated with the CS Mac lab, under the leadership of Kulbir Arora. I don't know much about that semester, as I had not started hanging out with the csgeeks yet.

One interesting related note is that at the beginning of the Fall 1989 semester [I think] the group of labbies had the now famous "MacLab - Kulbir & Co." tee-shirts printed. Many original geeks still have them lying about. (See Elyse wearing one, at the 2001 csgeeks reunion!)

I started hanging out with the group in the Spring 1989 semester. I was the TA for CS315, Non-Imperative Programming Languages, which Kulbir was teaching. And I started "associating" with the group - including sitting and chatting in class during the lectures, driving Kulbir crazy! The first social thing that I did with geeks was go out for ice-cream: It was the first real sunny day of the season, and Chris and Brian stopped by my CS351 office hours. They convinced me that it was sunny enough out to cut my CS666 class, and go with them and Jessie to Johnny B's for ice-cream, where we split a Godzilla. Since then, things have never been the same for me.

The group at this point (and at most others) was actually a conglomeration of a bunch of subgroups. The overall (alphabetical) list of people at this stage (and before) in the what-would-become-csgeeks group was:
Eric Bohm, Chris Cheung, Alex Damiani, Brian Glover, Siamak Khoubyari, Kim Kumar, Jackie Kud, Brent LaVelle, Jessie Lee, Davin Milun, Elyse Podnos, Rob Rothkopf, Steve Scarfone, Sandy Serota, Christine Smith, Will Starnes, Pam Thuman, Terry Wilmarth, Gene Zadzilka.

A diversion: some traditional events
A few csgeeks traditions have sprung up over the years, including Dancing on the last weekend in October.

Back to the main story
The reason that I mentioned the dancing night now, is that it formed the conversation around which the csgeeks mailing list was created. A whole group of us was having a very long, very prolific, often crude, email discussion (90+ messages in about 24 hours). It was started by Jackie who innocently asked about 10 of us:

  Hey all!!! :-)

What the hell are we doing this weekend???? Would be kinda nice to
know before it officially begins tomorrow at 4:00..... :-)

  Let's take votes!!!! :-)

  Discussion is officially open!!! :-)

And some discussion it was! The problem is that people kept accidentally getting lost off of To: lines, so not everyone got all the messages. So we decided that a mailing list would be the thing to do.

Chris organized it with Ken and Devon (the CS Dept Sysadmins at the time), and then sent this mail. When list became active, I managed to get the first message in. One person omitted from the initial list was added later on the first day that it existed was Terry. I believe that Andy Wallack was added shortly thereafter as well.

Other people who were on the csgeeks list at some point
There have been quite a few people who were part of csgeeks in the past, but are no longer on the current alias. Some are listed above, but I'll list them again now. I am listing "real" geeks, and not people who were on the list solely as SO's of other geeks:
Alex Damiani, Heather Goldstein, Brian Glover, Matt Klein (briefly), Gene Zadzilka.
[Once again, please send me additions/corrections/deletions]

Historical Trivia
Here are the dates that people were added to the alias, as well as a few miscellaneous things that I found in my (much too large) csgeeks mail archive (much of the older stuff (pre June 1993) was on floppy at home, until I retrieved it, on July 14, 1999):

  • To recap, the initial members of the mailing list on October 27, 1990, were Andy "Bud" Beers, Eric Bohm, Chris Cheung, Alex Damiani, Drew Gallatin, Brian Glover, Jessie Lee, Siamak Khoubyari, Jackie Kud, Davin Milun, Elyse Podnos, Sandy Serota, and Terry Wilmarth.
  • Andy Wallack was added shortly thereafter.
  • The first time that mail was sent to Jim Richmond and Greg Potts as well as csgeeks was on 31 Oct 90 by Bud, when inviting people to go see Zodiaque.
  • According to a rather amusing message on 5 Nov 90, Jim had recently been added to csgeeks.
  • Drew resisted sending mail to the alias for a few weeks, but eventually broke down on 18 Nov 90.
  • The context of various mail messages in September 1991 seem to indicate that Justin Diachun was on the alias by then.
  • The context of mail in October 1991 indicates that Heather Goldstein was on the alias by then.
  • A message from Elyse in September 1991 seems to indicate that Paula "peej" Freedman was not yet on the list. (Also, some of us still called her "Paula" back then!)
  • Matt Stock got added on November 24, 1991.
  • On February 27, 1992, we added Matt Klein to the alias, at Kulbir's request (he was Kulbir's mentee). It did not really work out, and he was not on the alias for very long (definitely until April - not sure how much longer).
  • The context of various mail messages in March 1992 indicates that Peej was on the alias by then. So that puts her add date as between September 1991 and March 1992.
  • John Whitley got added late Summer to early Fall 1992, his first semester at UB. He had been up to visit UB the previous semester, and had met us then.
  • Dan Boyd got added on September 21, 1992, after having been coming to movies etc. by following Whitley.
  • Gene Zadzilka got added on or around September 22, 1992, when he got email access again. I believe that even though he was part of the "core" group way back when, he had left before the alias was initially formed.
  • On November 23, 1992, Dan Boyd was kind enough (from a historian's perspective) to post the exact content of the then-current alias:
beers bohm boyd cheung diachun gallatin@cs.rpi.edu hsg khoub-s kud lmw milun podnos richmond serota stock whitley wilmarth zadzilka@wmavm7.vnet.ibm.com
Notes on this: "lmw" is Laura Williams, who was Drew's girlfriend at the time. Matt Klein (mpklein) was already off the list.
  • Alistair Campbell got adopted by csgeeks in late 1992. He describes it in more detail. (Actually, further research shows that he's slightly mistaken. He, and his then-wife Debbi, were added on August 24, 1993.)
  • There is a message dated December 10, 1992, which indicates that Peej was just added back to the list, because she got an account again.
  • On June 10, 1993, the list was changed from a hand-managed alias, to a Majordomo list.
  • Greg was definitely on the alias at the switchover to Majordomo, so he must have been added between November 1992 and June 1993.
  • Steve Gallo got added in Fall 1993, sometime shortly after the PreThanksgiving party.
  • I can't find any reference to Heather leaving the list. But the last messages from her were in the second half of 1993, which is when she moved to Chicago, IIRC.
  • I don't know when Gene was removed from the list, but the last messages from him were in mid 1993.
  • Adam Klein and Rafhael Cedeno were added on June 14, 1994.
  • Dan "Bif" Chen's introduction to csgeeks was at the 1994 July 4th csgeeks outing to see Crash Test Dummies, at the Buffalo Friendship Festival. He was added to the list on 10 August 1994. But he had been included in mail that Matt sent to geeks, since about May of that year.
  • Chris Stoner was added on 29 Sep 1994. But he had been included in mail that Dan Chen sent to geeks, since Jul 26.
  • Deborah Caruana (then Campbell) was removed in early 1995.
  • Matt and Davin registered csgeeks.org on June 7, 1995.
  • Kulbir Arora got formally added to the list on June 12, 1995.
  • Jen McNinch was added, by popular demand, in mid-June 1995.
  • On August 26, 1995, Chris Cheung removed himself from the csgeeks alias, and handed list-maintainer duties over to me (Davin). His job at the time did not give him enough time to keep up with the mail that csgeeks generated. And, on November 19, 1995, after a very successful PreThanksgiving party at his place, he was added back.
  • Annie Krueckeberg was added on August 28, 1995.
  • Aaron Firth was added on September 13, 1995, after feeling left out by all our csgeek discussions at gaming.
  • Elyse became Elyse Milun in 1995.
  • Debbie Burhans was added on September 2, 1996, because she was Alistair's SO at the time.
  • Sandy became Sandy Stock in 1996.
  • Scott Herman was added on November 18, 1996.
  • Elisabeth Cuddihy was added on March 20, 1998. Interestingly, various people (notably Boyd) had been cc'ing her on some csgeek mail, as far back as 1993.
  • Annie Krueckeberg was temporarily removed from the list in June 1999, because she was away in Ghana with the Peace Corps.
  • Chris Egert was added on July 8th, 1999.
  • Debbie Burhans was removed on July 8th, 1999.
  • Annie Krueckeberg was added back in April 2000, after returning from Ghana.
  • After being a virtual csgeek since the beginning, Helene Kershner was finally actually added to the list on May 26th, 2000.
  • Anne became Anne Standish in 2000.
  • Drew married Jenise in 2000.
  • After a really long absence, Jessie Lee was added back on July 10th, 2000.
  • Scott married Renee in 2001.
  • Alistair Campbell married Colleen Ring, in August 2001.
  • A csgeeks reunion was held in Buffalo, August 17-20, 2001.
  • September 11, 2001: We were all OK. Three csgeeks worked in the World Trade Center: Jim worked high in 2 WTC, but had taken the day off; Jen also worked in 2 WTC, but was going in late; and Elyse was at her work in 7 WTC, but evacuated immediately.
  • Andy Wallack was added back to the list on July 12, 2002, after he was discovered living in the NYC area. He had been off the list for MANY years.
  • Bif married Tina in 2003.
  • Raf got married in 2003.
  • Wallack's divorce became final in 2004.
  • Siamak married Felicite in 2004.
  • Whitley married Stacy, in 2004.
