Alistair's history with csgeeks

Alistair Campbell (aec@cs.buffalo.edu) joined the csgeeks alias in Fall of 1992. Alistair had seen the existence of the list during the 1991--1992 academic year, his first year as a CS Ph.D. student, but as he really didn't know anyone from csgeeks all that well, no one asked him to join. Alistair started to get to know Davin, Terry, Chris, and Elyse, mainly because they all showed up to CSGSA meetings where he was presiding. His first event was Davin's end-of-semester party in December of 1992. He showed up with his wife, Deborah (af977@freenet.buffalo.edu).

Deborah was added to csgeeks after it became clear that all of Alistair's social events would have to be coordinated through her anyway.

Alistair and Deborah were sort of marginal geeks, and didn't participate in all the traditional activities every year. Mostly they went to [geek movies], where Deborah always thought it funny that the geeks traditionaly stay until the end of closing credits. Some say Deborah was worried Alistair would become a "real geek" (tm) and start wearing blue jeans and t-shirts with silly sayings like "GNU's Not Unix" on them. Their first geek Thanksgiving was at Chris and Eric's place in November of 1993.

They hosted the first [Annual Campbell mid-spring-semester party] the weekend before spring break '94. A week later saw the institution of another tradition among a subset of csgeeks: The [annual dinner at Gabriel's Gate, and get really smashed on Guiness and Stoli while playing darts.] (Alistair, Chris, Greg, Steve, Eric... (who else?))

The Campbells separated in January of 1995, and Deborah remained on csgeeks until about March, when the proliferation of [messages dealing with religious issues] forced her finally to call that quits too.

Alistair now has two circles of friends: csgeeks and choir geeks. But the choir geeks aren't as cool as the csgeeks in that they don't have their own mail alias. To date there has only been marginal social overlap: Richard Clark (a choir geek) almost lost a [racquetball (the one true sport of the csgeeks)] match to Greg Potts (a csgeek).

Following separation, Alistair lived with Richard. They hosted the second Annual [Campbell-Clark mid-spring-semester party.] Alistair moved out of there and further into geekdom in the apartment at Berehaven shared by Greg and John Whitley, recently vacated by Jim Richmond.

Currently Alistair shares the apartment at Stockbridge with John Whitley. This certainly will be a site for future csgeek events.
